Questions and answers for composting toilets

Dry Toilet - the new shit!

Dry Toilet is the generic term for toilets that operate without a water flush. The best-known type is probably the privy or outhouse back in grandma’s day. There are also composting toilets and so-called separating or incinerating toilets. Depending on the type of toilet, the excreta are either separated or collected in a single container. Then, according to toilet-type, the faeces are composted, disposed of in a waste bin, or incinerated.

Most likely everyone has come across a few dry toilets at some point in their life, and perhaps already used one. They are often found at festivals, on construction sites, in public areas, at markets, on hiking trails, etc. Perhaps you’ve even spotted or used an öKlo before?

A dry toilet, however, is not to be confused with a chemical toilet. Apart from the fact that you can already smell them a mile away, the use of chemicals makes one thing impossible: composting.

Pros:

  • No drinking water is wasted – resource-saving
  • No chemicals – no toxic waste
  • It doesn’t smell
  • It is environmentally friendly
  • Disposing of the waste is not a laborious process requiring a great deal of energy and effort
  • It can be set up or installed almost anywhere
  • Hardly any electrics that could break down

Cons:

  • Requires accessories such as collecting bags or litter, for example
  • When it comes to humus or incinerating toilets, sufficient electricity or gas is needed to operate them
  • It is very expensive to purchase
  • You have to deal with your excreta

Although all dry toilets can do without water, they differ a lot in how they function.

Composting toilet – a dry toilet where liquid and solid substances are not separated.

In a composting toilet, human waste is collected together in a container in order to then be composted.

Covering material such as bark mulch or sawdust prevents the development of bad odours and promotes biodegradation.

Separating toilet – a dry toilet where liquid and solid substances are separated.

As the name ‘separating toilet’ already says, liquid and solid excreta are separated, either directly in the container using special insert, or already into two different containers when using the toilet.

Separating toilets with two different containers are often used as camping toilets. These toilets have a so-called separator, which helps to direct the excreta into two separate containers while the toilet is being used: Liquid at the front, solids at the back.

In both cases, litter is used to cover the excreta. This dries the faeces, at the same time absorbing any bad odours.

Liquid and solid substances are disposed of and/or composted separately.

Humus toilet – a dry toilet with composter

With a humus toilet, excreta are pre-composted in the container before being added to the compost heap. When it comes to humus toilets, liquid and solid substances are either collected separately or together. Here, too, litter is used to cover the excreta.

Humus toilets require quite a bit of technology as well, such as: Aeration vents, rotating drums, heating rods, and mixers. These prevent odour formation and trigger the composting process. This type of toilet requires an electrical connection to operate the system.

Incinerating toilet – a dry toilet with an incinerator

In incinerating toilets, the excreta are burned in a combustion chamber directly after the toilet has been used. The exhaust gases are extracted. All that remains is a little sterile ash.

This toilet also requires sufficient electricity or gas supply for the combustion process. If the power supply is not reliable, the system may malfunction. Compared to other dry toilets, the cost of purchasing an incinerating toilet is very high.

Toilets without a water connection are very versatile.

On the one hand, the toilet could be installed indoors.

Examples of where dry toilets could be permanently installed:

Prefabricated houses

Garden houses

Allotment garden houses

Holiday homes

Ski huts and mountain huts

Campers and caravans

Boats

On the other hand, with portable dry toilets such as our öKlo Classic, the possibilities are almost endless as to where they can be used. Our portable toilets can be set up at whatever location our employees are able to reach on foot.

Examples of where portable dry toilets could be used:

Garden parties

Construction sites

Festivals

Nature reserves

Parking lots

Allotments

Playgrounds & cemeteries

Locations without water and/or sewer connections

As emergency toilets

Disaster regions

There are many more possibilities that we may not (yet) have even thought of.

Of course, it is possible to build your own dry toilet!

However, what we would like to point out here, is that it takes a lot of planning and materials research to build a product that matches an öKlo in quality! If you choose one of our öKlo products, we will have already done all that hard work for you!

This is how it works

The capacity is 60 litres per tub – i.e. about 150 trips to the toilet per tub. 2 tubs fit under one toilet – a total of 120 litres. Depending on how often you empty them or if you use more tubs, you can prolong the “life” of the toilet!

Yes! No smell whatsoever. You just need to ensure that enough sawdust is thrown into the tub after each use, otherwise the ammonia in the urine can cause an odour.

There are different types: Bark mulch, sawdust or small pet litter, cat litter, humus, Terra-Preta, soil, dry coffee grounds.

We recommend sawdust – this can be obtained either from carpentry shops or directly from the sawmill. Alternatively, standard hamster litter from the pet shop is very good, too. We use sawdust in our öKlos and have had the best experience with this.

Just use a little more litter! We also recommend simply paying more attention to cleanliness during this time and emptying the tub more often in between – if cleaning and disposal is not anyway carried out by öKlo.

Human excreta naturally have an intrinsic smell. Unfortunately, you can’t avoid it completely – but by adding litter you can counteract the smell very well. Urine also smells, of course – but the typical odour of ammonia is not there as long as it is not mixed with water. The best way to compare the smell when disposing of the waste, is to that of emptying a cat’s litter tray.

All about the öKlo

Our öKlo is a sustainable and ecological dry toilet made of wood.

You can find an overview of all our products in the shop.oeklo.at webshop.

We use sawdust instead of drinking water for all our dry toilets. This prevents smells and at the same time covers the waste, thus ensuring a certain anonymity. By the way, you save about 5 litres of drinking water with every trip to the toilet!

only high quality, sustainable materials

weather and moisture-resistant – thus suitable in any season

stable construction

odourless and easy to maintain

does not require a power or water connection

  • 2 tubs, each with a capacity of 60 litres

  • Toilet seat

  • Lockable door

  • Solar light with motion detector and a battery lamp

  • Litter box with sawdust (XX litres of sawdust fit into the litter box)

  • Toilet paper dispenser with 5 rolls of toilet paper

  • Disinfectant dispenser

  • Mirror

  • Sawdust shovel and brush

  • Sanitary waste bin

Yes! You can, of course, also find a child seat in our shop.oeklo.at webshop.

Unfortunately, they are not available for lease!

Each öKlo is equipped with a solar light and motion detector. This means that it only lights up when needed. If the sun does not shine for a long time, the light runs on an additional integrated battery. The battery is also always kept charged by the sun via a solar panel integrated in the roof.

Yes! We have extensively tested it!

Wind, sun, snow & rain are not an issue for our products – we are dealing with an Austrian quality product here!

The öKlo itself weighs 250 kg! Thanks to its stable construction, no toilet has ever fallen over since the company’s start in 2017!

For additional stability, there are four scaffolding feet, with four holes on each base plate, that can be anchored to the ground.

Once – at a golf course, a tree with a trunk diameter of around 40 cm fell onto one of our toilets – the toilet remained completely undamaged!

öKlo Classic – 120 x 120 x 230 cm (WxDxH)

öKlo for wheelchair users – 180 x 160 x 220 cm (WxDxH)

Washstand – 120 x 60 x 220 cm (WxDxH)

Urinal – 290 x 120 x 220 cm (WxDxH)

öKlo LuliDu – 120 x 80 x 110 cm (WxDxH)

öKlo Shower – 120 x 120 x 280 cm (WxDxH)

There should be at least 60 cm of space behind each toilet, so that you can easily access the back to change the tubs.

And what else do I need?

Toilet paper – no matter what kind of toilet – toilet paper is always needed. Since we place great emphasis on sustainability, we recommend toilet paper that at least bears the “Blue Angel” environmental label.

Litter, granulate, bark mulch – in most dry toilets, litter is used for composting or drying the faeces. There are different types: Bark mulch, sawdust or small pet litter, cat litter, humus, Terra-Preta, soil, dry coffee grounds

We recommend sawdust or wood shavings – these can be obtained either from carpentry shops or directly from the sawmill. Alternatively, standard hamster litter from the pet shop is very good, too. We use sawdust or wood shavings in our öKlos and have had the best experience with this.

No! Our toilets are completely self-sufficient. Wood shavings or sawdust are used instead of water.

Basically – No.

All toilet paper can be recycled. However, depending on its composition, it can take several years to decompose. We therefore recommend environmentally friendly toilet paper, which at least bears the eco-label “Blue Angel”. We do not recommend wet towels and perfumed toilet paper!

Information about events in general

How many toilets are required for an event?

That depends entirely on the number of visitors expected. We recommend at least one toilet per 100 people!

If you want to keep the toilet queues short for your customers, then we recommend 1 toilet per 50 people!

Since we do not need a suction unit, our toilets can be installed anywhere and at any time!

In our experience, when there are a large number of toilets in one place, it is easiest to place them in a U-shape with the öKlo door facing outwards. This makes it even more convenient for visitors and our staff can work at the back without disturbing them.

However, the öKlos can also be set up with the doors facing each other. From experience, we need at least 6 m of space between the toilets so that the visitors have enough room to go in and out.

The effort for service, set-up, dismantling etc. is the same for us in both cases.

YES!

In the case of long-term rentals, we regularly come by to refill the sawdust box!

For short-term rentals, we provide sufficient sawdust.

All about our service!

At events and for permanent rentals, we take care of the proper disposal of the full tubs. We regularly come back to replace full tubs with new, clean tubs. At events which have booked a full-time, 24/7 service, our service staff continuously ensures that the tubs are emptied and replaced.

As a private customer, you can of course compost your waste yourself, or use a local refuse disposal. Commercially, composting faeces is not yet permitted!

When spreading compost, we ask that you adhere to the currently valid regulations and laws, and regard water and soil protection as the highest priority, both for your own protection as well as that of your fellow human beings.

Composting is a complex process that requires a great deal of expertise and attention. In the private domain, these hurdles are easy to overcome. Please note, however, that this compost may not be sold.

Naturally, we will gladly take the composting process off your hands. Which is why we are happy to offer our attractive öKlo-all-round-service whereby, similar to your regular refuse collection system, we collect and dispose of the full tubs, replacing them with new, clean ones at a time coordinated with you in advance.

This means that you never have to deal with the contents of the tub yourself and tiresome cleaning work is a thing of the past, too. As a little added-extra, our staff will also refill your sawdust container and disinfection dispenser.

We are happy to arrange a pick-up service for a journey fee – just write to us or call us!

Cleaning and maintenance are not much different to looking after a water toilet. Since our öKlo is made entirely of wood, simply using warm water and a disinfectant spray for cleaning generally suffices. It is therefore very easy to maintain.

With permanent rentals, we come once a week (or more or less often, gladly as required) to clean and maintain the öKlo. The price also includes the refilling of sawdust, toilet paper & disinfectant, as well as any repairs!

For our “house builders”, we only charge travel/delivery costs when we actually visit you – by prior arrangement of course. We are also happy to provide you with a few more tubs at the same time.

Yes! The öKlos are tough and can even withstand freezing temperatures. Since there are no pipes that could freeze up, there is nothing to worry about!

Nothing is impossible – we are very open to any good & fair proposals!

Allotment gardens

Yes! Each öKlo product has adjustable feet that can be easily adapted to local conditions.

No! On the contrary, thanks to the stack effect, the öKlo is always well ventilated. Furthermore, wood does not heat up so much!

Communities

No! A very clear no!

What is written on the offer, is also written on the bill!

We have, of course, had instances of vandalism, especially in public places – but not as bad as expected!

However, our experience so far shows that due to the high weight (250 kg, lower centre of gravity), our cubicles are not “thrown about”. From time to time, (presumably young) artists immortalise themselves on our cubicles – but this is easily fixed by simply sanding the wood down after a season! Since our cubicles consist of modular components, it is no problem to replace them even if they are seriously damaged!

You pay – you get!

We will come by as often as you want – once a day or up to once every 14 days – and clean the toilets, re-fill the sawdust, toilet paper, and disinfectant, replace the full tubs with new, clean ones, and take care of their professional disposal. If repairs become necessary, they are already included and will not be charged extra!

Unser Personal kümmert sich um die stetige Befüllung der Sägespäne, des Toilettenpapiers und des Desinfektionsmittels sowie natürlich auch die ständige Entleerung und Reinigung der Toiletten.

Our öKlos are very easy on the nose. You just need to ensure that enough sawdust is thrown into the container after each use! However, this happens automatically given that users feel embarrassed! No one wants their waste to be visible.

No! There is a 60-litre tub under each toilet, which holds the equivalent of about 150 trips to the toilet. We replace these manually, so there is certainly no danger of a total outage of a toilet. The tubs can even be transported on very wet and/or slippery surfaces – and without the help of any machinery!

Since this system is also designed for disaster situations, both we and our toilets can cope with rainy and overcrowded events, no problem!

Our full-time service ensures that the full tubs are regularly replaced with new, clean tubs!

Our main priority is to never let a toilet become so full that you cannot or do not want to use it anymore!

Campsites

There is a guide on the inside of each öKlo door. Pictograms (pictures) make it easy to understand the instructions, even for people from other cultures!

Yes! Our motto is situational flexibility!

Yes! Our toilets can also be used as squat toilets.

Due to the large, even surface on which the toilet opening is located, you can also very easily squat!
